Nervous System 101: Why You Feel the Way You Feel
Let’s talk about your nervous system—the behind-the-scenes control panel that’s quietly running the show. If you’ve ever thought:
“Why am I so on edge all the time?”
“Why can’t I relax—even when things are fine?”
“Why do I shut down or freeze when I need to speak up?”
…that’s your nervous system talking.
Understanding your nervous system is one of the most empowering things you can do for your mental health.
If you’ve ever wondered why your body reacts so strongly—even when you “know” things are okay—you’re not alone. These responses aren’t random. They’re your nervous system trying to protect you.

🌡️ Your Nervous System Isn’t Broken—It’s Protective
Your autonomic nervous system is in charge of how your body responds to stress, safety, danger, and everything in between. It works automatically—like breathing or blinking—and it has one main job:
To keep you alive.
It’s not thinking about deadlines, relationships, or social etiquette. It’s thinking:
- “Is this safe?”
- “Do I need to run, fight, freeze, or hide?”
- “Can I rest now?”
🧠 The 3 Main States of the Nervous System
Most of us move through these states every day (sometimes within the same hour!):
1. Fight or Flight
Your body’s on high alert. You might feel:
- Anxious, irritable, overwhelmed
- Like you need to do something right now
- Restless, jumpy, wired but tired
2. Freeze / Shut Down
Your system feels beyond stressed and checks out. You might feel:
- Numb or spaced out
- Exhausted or disconnected
- Like you’ve disappeared inside yourself
3. Rest & Digest / Safe & Social
This is your “regulated” state. You might feel:
- Calm, present, connected
- Able to think clearly and engage with others
- Like yourself
👉 Why this can feel confusing
You might notice that your reactions don’t always match what’s happening around you.
You might:
- Feel on edge in situations that seem “fine”
- Shut down when you want to speak up
- Struggle to relax, even when you finally have time
This can feel frustrating—especially when part of you is thinking, “I shouldn’t feel like this.”
But your nervous system isn’t responding to what’s happening now—it’s responding to what it has learned is important or potentially unsafe.
👉 And it’s trying to protect you.
👉 Why it’s not about “just calming down”
When your nervous system is activated, it’s not a thinking problem—it’s a body response.
That’s why:
- Telling yourself to “relax” doesn’t work
- Logic doesn’t always help in the moment
- You can feel stuck in patterns you don’t fully understand
Your body is doing what it’s designed to do: keep you safe.
The goal isn’t to force it to stop—
it’s to help it feel safe enough to settle.
🔁 The Problem? We Can Get Stuck
Trauma, chronic stress, burnout, and neurodivergence can keep us stuck in survival mode. When that happens, even small things can feel huge, and our body’s alarm system keeps going off—even when there’s no real danger.
This isn’t a character flaw. It’s your system doing its best with what it’s learned.
🔧 The Good News: You Can Rewire It
The nervous system is plastic—meaning it can learn, heal, and change over time. At Biopsyche, we use neuro-informed tools to help people:
- Understand their nervous system
- Build body awareness and regulation skills
- Shift from survival mode into safety (at your own pace)
- Recover from trauma and burnout with compassion, not pressure
🌿 How to calm your nervous system (a starting point)
If your nervous system feels overwhelmed, start small:
- Notice what your body is doing (tightness, restlessness, shutdown)
- Slow your breathing slightly (longer exhale than inhale)
- Ground yourself in your environment (what you can see, hear, feel)
You don’t need to fix everything—just begin by noticing.
👉 Understanding is the first step
Your nervous system isn’t broken—it’s adaptive.
It has learned how to respond based on your experiences, and it’s doing its best to keep you safe.
When you begin to understand these patterns, things can start to shift—not all at once, but gradually, in ways that feel more manageable and sustainable.
👉 You don’t have to figure this out alone
If you’re noticing these patterns in yourself, it can be helpful to explore them with support.
Therapy can help you understand your nervous system, work with your responses (rather than against them), and find strategies that actually fit your life.
💬 Final Thoughts
You’re not “too sensitive.” You’re not overreacting. You’re not lazy.
You’re wired for protection—and you can learn to feel safe again.
If you want to explore this more deeply, you’re welcome to get in touch or book a session. And stay tuned—I’ll be sharing more tools and insights in upcoming posts on how to support your nervous system through everyday life.
Warmly,
Suzanne Robertson
